There’s more to creating a brand than designing a nice logo or choosing a colour palette. You need to bear other aspects in mind. For example, creating a tagline.
I’ve sometimes found it difficult to explain to clients why having a good tagline is just as important as having a good logo. In their minds, a tagline is something only big companies have, not first-time entrepreneurs like them who are just starting out on the adventure of creating a business.
But just what IS a tagline?
A TAGLINE IS THE VERBAL EQIVALENT OF A COMPANY LOGO
A tagline is a concentrated sentence that defines your brand values and identity. A typical tagline is composed of seven words or less. Writing a catchy tagline isn’t easy – you need to say a lot with a little, and at the same time provide a picture of what you do. And, just as you stick with a logo, your tagline is seldom changed once established.
You can use your tagline on things like:
STATIONERY
LEAFLETS
SIGNS
BUSINESS CARDS
WEBSITE HEADERS
Here are three easy steps for creating your tagline.
Let’s say you have a copywriting business, and you want to create a killer tagline:
STEP 1:
Write a list of words that describe what your business is all about: writer, copywriter, business, confident, experienced.
STEP 2:
Put them together in a sentence:
I am an experienced copywriter. I can help business owners to become confident writers. With my help they can develop their own unique voice that can attract their favourite clients, thereby selling more.
STEP 3:
Boil it down:
I help small biz owners become confident writers and find their voice so they can attract their favourite clients and sell more.
Cut, cut, cut until you have a sentence of ten words or less.
